MurdeR on the WriterLy Wreck

Ten writers are invited to beta-test a new writing program aboard the Shelly & Christie Express. A two week all-expense-paid escape aboard the most aesthetically pleasing, writer-friendly, literary-inspired train that money can buy? What could possibly go wrong!

Well... actually, just one thing could, and does, go wrong: Murder.

Armed with the absurd and obscure knowledge that writers have, the remaining nine participants pool their knowledge and skill together to solve the mystery before - like so many of their favorite characters - they're each killed off.

Two weeks, nine writers, a crew of six, and a dead body.

This is exactly what everyone should have expected.

Story Bio

Who:

Murder on The Writerly Wreck

What:

Satire, comedy, contemporary, *mystery

When:

No idea! Maybe a couple of years?

Where:

First draft!

Why:

I've always loved murder mysteries. And of course, when we love something we make fun of it. Given that I also love satire, this story was a very natural development.

MoTWW is a very different project for me. I've never written a contemporary novel before and I don't really read contemporary, either.

I also haven't used this kind of style, cast, or plot before.

Despite this, this story is still very much so me. I love the freedom I've had with it - the humor, characters, cameos, easter eggs, setting, and writer+reader culture of it all, are things that I don't usually get to represent in my other projects but thoroughly enjoy nonetheless.

It's also great fun to pay homage to (and poke fun at) some of my dearly loved books and authors - such as Christie and Doyle.

Thus far I've been describing MoTWW as my "absolutely unhinged murder comedy" and I think that describes it well, honestly.

*Astrix because while the characters are trying to solve the mystery, the reader already knows who dunnit.
